Weather or Climate

Weather is the condition of the air around us in a particular place at a particular time. It is the daily changes in the temperature, precipitation, wind speed, etc from day to day. Weather implies a short time period. For example, the weather on a certain day may be windy and cool.

Climate is the sort of weather that can normally be expected in an area over a long periods. It sums up the average weather conditions recorded over a period of 30 years. For example, tropical countries have hot climates and the Arctic has a cold climate.

Are each of these statements related to weather or climate?

“I think we should move to France where it is warmer.”
“My washing will never dry today.”
“December is wet and cold.”
“Where should we go for our skiing holiday this year?”

Assignment 2
Climate graphs show the average temperature and rainfall, by month, for a location. The temperature is always shown as a red line graph. The rainfall is always shown as a blue bar chart.
Task - Producing Climate Graphs
Produce two climate graphs - one for location in the Northern Hemisphere and one for a location in the Southern Hemisphere. One (or both) of them should be produced by hand and/or the other (or both) should be produced using Excel (or Numbers).. You can find the necessary data by clicking on the WorldClimate.com banner below.

N.B:
  • Your x-axis will have the months of the year
  • Your y-axis on the left will rain fall measure in mm
  • Your y-axis on the right will have 'average' temperature. (Please, note that 'Average high' and 'Average low' should be averaged.)
  • DO NOT USE ANY OF THE PLACES IDENTIFIED IN THE Koppen-Geiger Climate Classification website above. Use World Climate and select your own places.
